I don't really write hotel reviews but the old cataract was one of the best experiences i have had in recent years.
There is a moment in the evening when sun goes down and you are sitting down for tea/coffee where you can look past the 120yr old balcony on to nile river full of sail boats and sand hills on the other side. I will never be able to forget or describe the pink granite facade in the evening.
quick history
Built in 1899 by Thomas Cook to house European travelers, the Old Cataract has had Agatha Christie penned portions of "Death on the Nile" here and has her suite open for experience. The hotel's name derives from the nearby "cataract" – the ancient term for the Nile's rapids formed by granite outcrops.
The property consists of two distinct sections: the original Palace Wing and the newer Nile Wing. The Palace Wing preserves much of its Victorian-era charm with period furnishings, intricate woodwork, and original architectural details.
